The CDL Class 'A' program is designed to prepare the student for the Commercial Driver License written and road test administered by the Tennessee Department of Safety in just 4 weeks.

This program is a 160 hour program and broken into 3 segments:

The first segment, Classroom, is designed to give each student an understanding of his coming role within the transportation industry.  It is of primary importance for a student to identify responsibilities to self, to family, to the motoring public, and a future employer, as well as to the State and Federal agencies which govern the transportation industry.  A significant portion of classroom training is designed to aid the students in passing the knowledge section of the Commercial Driver License (CDL) examination.  This consists of a comprehensive analysis of all aspects of the Tractor/Trailer systems and operation.  In addition, the student will come to understand driver qualifications, hours of service limitations, and driver wellness (proper nutrition, avoiding sleep deprivation and the harmful effects of drug and alcohol use).

The second segment, Driver Skills training, is designed to give the student various required operational skills, as defined in Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulation 49 CFR 383.113, utilizing the type of vehicle that the student expects to operate (tractor and 53' van trailer). The primary goal is to develop the student's ability to maneuver the vehicle within confined areas.

The third segment, Road Training, is designed to further enhance the student’s driving skills on the open road.  Again, the necessary skills are outlined in Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulation 49 CFR 383.113 and include such skills as speed and space management, hazard perception, emergency maneuvers, and skid control and recovery.
